Hojicha — Organic Toasted Green Tea

A roasted tea from Japan naturally low in caffeine

The ideal choice for those who love green tea but seek an infusion that is almost entirely caffeine-free.
Hojicha breaks all traditional rules: unlike classic green teas, it leaves behind herbaceous and vegetal notes to make room for sweetness and a total absence of bitterness. The leaves, processed according to ancient tradition, release a comforting aroma of hazelnut, bread crust, and caramel in the cup. The result is a premium, amber-colored loose-leaf tea that is smooth and full-bodied.

Sensory Profile

  • Intensity: 4/5 (full-bodied, rounded, and persistent)

  • Bitterness: 0/5 (completely absent)

  • Dominant Notes: toasted, sweet, and woody

  • Caffeine: Near zero (extremely low content)

When to enjoy it

Perfect after main meals due to its exceptional digestive properties, and sublime as an evening infusion right before bed.

Production Details

  • Origin: Japan

  • Processing: High-temperature artisanal roasting of green tea leaves (Bancha or Sencha). This controlled thermal shock causes the caffeine to sublimate, reducing it to near-zero levels and eliminating any bitterness from the leaves.

Ingredients

100% toasted Hojicha green tea. This tea is certified 100% organic.

Is this tea for you?

Yes, if...

  • You are looking for a real tea (not a herbal infusion) to drink after dinner or late at night without affecting your sleep.

  • You suffer from stomach acidity or slow digestion: Hojicha is traditionally used in Japan for its soothing and digestive action on the gastric mucosa.

  • You love warm, toasted, and smooth flavours reminiscent of hazelnut or roasted barley, but with the elegance of a premium tea.

Skip it if...

  • You are looking for a classic green tea with a markedly herbaceous, fresh, or citrusy flavour.

  • You desire a strong energy boost or a caffeine kick for studying or working.

Brewing Guide

Follow these steps to get the best from your infusion:

  • Quantity: 2,5-3 g of tea (or 1 scoop with our perfect cup tea spoon) for a 200 ml cup

  • Water: 70°C–80°C

  • Infusion time: 2–3 minutes

Our Tip

Hojicha is an incredibly generous tea. Thanks to the roasting of the leaf, you can reuse the same leaves for a second or even third infusion within the same day.
An extra idea: If you want to try an amazing and super-comforting drink (very trendy in Tokyo coffee shops), prepare a very concentrated cup of Hojicha and add frothed hot oat milk with a pinch of brown sugar or maple syrup. You will get an Hojicha Latte with a toasted, creamy flavour that is truly addictive!

Sweet pairings

The toasty sweetness of Hojicha makes it an ideal companion for delicate desserts:

  • vanilla panna cotta or crème caramel

  • matcha shortbread or sesame cookies

  • almond cake or rice flour sponge cake

  • roasted chestnut pastries

Savoury pairings

For a savoury contrast, choose flavours that echo its warmth without overpowering it:

  • miso rice crackers or toasted nori snacks

  • poached mushrooms with soy or sesame glaze

  • lightly salted edamame

  • mild cheese with toasted bread

These pairings highlight the tea’s roasted aromas and balanced sweetness, allowing its smooth, soothing character to take centre stage.

1 review for Hojicha — Organic Toasted Green Tea

  1. verapannozzo (Italy)

The best green tea I’ve ever had. I bought it at a lovely pastry shop near my house, and I was honestly blown away. It has a fresh aroma and a smooth, completely non-bitter taste. It’s light-years ahead of the bagged green teas I used to drink—this is a whole different level. You can really tell it’s premium quality. I even bought another pack as a gift, and it was a huge hit. Highly recommended!

FAQs

Does this tea contain caffeine?

Hojicha naturally contains very little caffeine. Because it is made from roasted stems (kukicha) rather than young tea buds, it has significantly lower caffeine than most green teas — making it a soothing choice for the evening or after meals. The gentle roasting also softens the flavour, offering comfort without stimulation.

What is the difference between Hojicha and Kukicha?

Kukicha is a Japanese “twig tea” made primarily from stems and stalks of the tea plant. Hojicha is kukicha that has been roasted, which gives it its signature toasted aroma, warm caramel-like notes, and even lower caffeine than unroasted kukicha. In other words, Hojicha = roasted kukicha.

How is Hojicha traditionally enjoyed in Japan?

In Japan, Hojicha is a comforting everyday tea, often served after dinner, in teahouses, and even to children and the elderly because of its mild nature. It is considered a “hospitality tea” — a warm, soothing cup offered to guests to create a sense of calm welcome and relaxation.
