Hojicha

Green Tea

Hojicha is a traditional Japanese roasted green tea made from the stems and leaves of late-season harvests. Its gentle roasting process gives it a naturally low-caffeine profile and a warm, toasty aroma with soft caramel-like notes. Smooth and grounding, this tea is especially comforting in the evening and pairs beautifully with desserts thanks to its subtle smokiness and round flavour.

Other information

Hojicha was first created in Kyoto in the 1920s, when tea artisans began lightly roasting leftover stems and leaves over charcoal to reduce bitterness and create a smoother, more comforting cup. Over time, this humble discovery became a beloved everyday tea in Japan — especially in the evening — thanks to its naturally low caffeine content and gentle, nurturing flavour.

Carefully roasted to bring out warm notes of toasted grain and soft caramel, Hojicha reflects the calm refinement of Japanese tea culture: simple, grounding, and quietly elegant. Our organic Hojicha is made from roasted Kukicha (twig tea), giving it a uniquely mellow body and a lingering sweetness that pairs beautifully with dessert or quiet nighttime rituals.

Sweet pairings

The toasty sweetness of Hojicha makes it an ideal companion for delicate desserts:

  • vanilla panna cotta or crème caramel

  • matcha shortbread or sesame cookies

  • almond cake or rice flour sponge cake

  • roasted chestnut pastries

Savoury pairings

For a savoury contrast, choose flavours that echo its warmth without overpowering it:

  • miso rice crackers or toasted nori snacks

  • poached mushrooms with soy or sesame glaze

  • lightly salted edamame

  • mild cheese with toasted bread

These pairings highlight the tea’s roasted aromas and balanced sweetness, allowing its smooth, soothing character to take centre stage.

FAQs

Does this tea contain caffeine?

Hojicha naturally contains very little caffeine. Because it is made from roasted stems (kukicha) rather than young tea buds, it has significantly lower caffeine than most green teas — making it a soothing choice for the evening or after meals. The gentle roasting also softens the flavour, offering comfort without stimulation.

What is the difference between Hojicha and Kukicha?

Kukicha is a Japanese “twig tea” made primarily from stems and stalks of the tea plant. Hojicha is kukicha that has been roasted, which gives it its signature toasted aroma, warm caramel-like notes, and even lower caffeine than unroasted kukicha. In other words, Hojicha = roasted kukicha.

How is Hojicha traditionally enjoyed in Japan?

In Japan, Hojicha is a comforting everyday tea, often served after dinner, in teahouses, and even to children and the elderly because of its mild nature. It is considered a “hospitality tea” — a warm, soothing cup offered to guests to create a sense of calm welcome and relaxation.
