Darjeeling Tea: The Champagne of Black Teas

Est. Reading: 3 minutes

For many tea lovers, black tea evokes comfort, depth, and energy. But not all black teas are created equal. Some carry with them a story of place, heritage, and climate — and Darjeeling is one of them. Cultivated in the cool embrace of the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling tea is unlike any other.

More Than a Place: The Himalayan Essence of Darjeeling Tea

Darjeeling tea is grown in the Indian state of West Bengal, nestled high in the foothills of the Himalayas. The plantations stretch from 600 to 2,000 meters above sea level, where mountain mists, cool winds, and sharp sunlight meet. This unique terroir, combined with slow plant growth due to the altitude, gives Darjeeling its elegant, layered character.

What makes Darjeeling even more special is its origin: although most Indian teas are produced using Camellia sinensis var. assamica, Darjeeling stands apart: it is made primarily from Camellia sinensis var. sinensis, a smaller-leaved Chinese variety.

The two differ not only in leaf size but also in character. The assamica variety grows best in warm, low-altitude regions. Its large leaves and high yield create bold, malty teas — such as the classic Assam. In contrast, sinensis prefers the cooler, mist-covered slopes of the Himalayas, growing more slowly and developing nuanced aromas. That’s why Darjeeling is lighter and more floral than most black teas. It combines depth with the refinement usually found in fine white or green teas.

Some First Flush Darjeeling teas are sold at exclusive auctions, fetching prices over €1,800 per kilo.
Their rarity and delicate aroma make them some of the most treasured teas in the world.

The First Flush – a seasonal treasure

Every spring, after months of rest, the tea bushes awaken again — ready to produce their first tender leaves. The first harvest — known as the First Flush — takes place between March and April. These early leaves are picked by hand and processed gently to preserve their brightness, light floral notes, and natural sweetness. The result is a tea that’s fresh, vibrant, and refined. In character, it’s closer to a green or oolong than to a traditional black tea.

Later in the season, the Second Flush harvest begins — from late spring to early summer. These teas develop a fuller body and deeper aroma. They are best known for their distinctive muscatel flavour: a complex profile with notes reminiscent of ripe grapes, stone fruit, and a hint of spice.

While later harvests (like the Autumnal Flush) offer a mellower, earthy cup, the First Flush remains the most prized for its bright, floral clarity and delicate structure.

A protected name, a global reputation

Darjeeling tea was the first tea in the world to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) status — a prestigious certification that protects the name and guarantees authenticity. Only tea produced in the 87 registered gardens of the Darjeeling region can legally carry the name.

This recognition reflects the care and craftsmanship behind every cup, and why Darjeeling is often referred to as the “Champagne of tea.” Like fine wine, its flavour is shaped by altitude, climate, and season — and no two harvests are ever exactly the same.

Why choose Darjeeling?

  • It’s a celebration of both tradition and environment — a tea that speaks of its origin.
  • It’s refined and aromatic, with notes of muscatel grapes, wildflowers, and cool mountain air.
  • Best enjoyed plain, without milk or sugar, to fully appreciate its delicate floral and fruity notes.
  • Its nuanced character pairs beautifully with light pastries, making it a refined choice for tea time.
